Dr. Pihlgren is a fully-licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of adolescents and adults with moderate to severe psychological disorders. Through his extensive educational, training and work experience, Dr. Pihlgren is uniquely qualified to provide psychotherapy to treat a broad range of emotional and behavior problems.

Completed Masters Degree & Internship

Dr. Pihlgren earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Wayne State University, where he graduated with honors. Dr. Pihlgren earned his Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio. After completing his graduate coursework, Dr. Pihlgren completed a 1-year internship at Henry Ford Health System, specializing in Outpatient Psychotherapy and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

9 Years as a Research Psychologist

Following his internship, Dr. Pihlgren worked for 9 years as a Research Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine. Dr. Pihlgren spent most of this time as a Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator on studies conducted as part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trails Network (CTN). Dr. Pihlgren also continued to treat patients at Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Professionals (PBMP), Inc., the outpatient psychiatry clinic affiliated with WSU.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

While working at WSU, Dr. Pihlgren completed the intensive training course in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) conducted by Behavioral Tech, LLC–the organization founded by Dr. Marsha Linehan to provide training to mental health providers. Since that time, Dr. Pihlgren has provided individual psychotherapy for adolescents and adults seeking DBT. Dr. Pihlgren continues to coordinate treatment with WSU’s Department of Psychology for patients who participate in DBT Skills Groups at WSU.

Opened his own practice

In 2009, Dr. Pihlgren opened his own practice with offices in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Dr. Pihlgren continues to provide treatment to patients from metropolitan Detroit, and has been consistently identified as one of the area’s “Best Rated Psychologists” through online patient satisfaction surveys.
